Abstract
Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors affecting communication ability of nursing students¡¯ clinical practice stress, empathy and self-esteem.

Methods : This study was conducted from June 1 to June 30, 2018 in 261 third and fourth graders of four universities in Gyeonggi-do. Technical statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients, Stepwise multiple regression Respectively.

Results : The results of the study showed that communication ability was 3.67(¡¾0.46), empathy was 3.40(¡¾0.35), clinical practice stress was 3.11(¡¾0.59) and self-esteem was 3.09(¡¾0.53) respectively. Clinical practice stress was positively correlated with empathy(r£½.15, p£½.013), self-esteem(r£½-.22, p£½.001) There was a significant negative correlation with communication ability(r£½-.20, p£½.001). Empathy was positively correlated with self-esteem(r£½.14, p£¼.001) and communication ability(r£½.25, p£¼.001). Self-esteem was positively correlated with communication ability(r£½.51, p£¼.001). Multiple regression analysis showed that the regression fit F value was 33.22, which was statistically significant(p£¼.001), and the explanatory power of the model was 29.7%. Self-esteem was the greatest predictor of communication ability.

Conclusion : It is necessary to develop educational programs to reduce emotional stress and improve empathy and self-esteem in order to improve communication ability of nursing students.
